Comic & Literature Festival
Institute of Contemporary Arts, London
5 November 2007
A launch event as part of Comica, an annual festival of international comic art and literature curated by freelance journalist, lecturer, writer and broadcaster Paul Gravett.
John Hegley will be hosting this bigger! better! new! launch party - a cabaret of theatre, art, music and comedy - for Our Comic Book, a collection of new graphic works by comedians, poets, writers and artists who love cartoons.
The evening will be based on clips from the silent-film collection of cult NY cartoonist Mark Newgarden, who has amassed an extraordinary range of 16mm films, from anonymous and utterly inexplicable homemade reels to rare prints of early animations. (titles include Spanuth’s Trained Baby Elephant, How Not To Undress and Chip the Wooden Man in The Magic Wand.) Artists providing new live soundtracks to these films include The Bohman Brotehrs & Richard Thomas. We also have composer Paul Clark of The Clod Ensemble with pianist John Paul Gandy, The Dolly Mixtures dancing to the piano, accordion, ukelele and glockenspiel of Martin White, spoken wordist Suzanne Andrade (of 1927 cabaret), artist Brian Dewan presenting his Deuteronomy film strip - a slide show with sound effects and considerable educational value - and Simon Munnery will be in a live satellite link-up with himself.
The performers will be available to sign copies of Our Comic Book in the ICA Bookshop before the event and during the interval.
